Furries are good, actually

…I shouldn’t have read the comments.

I like Xe’s blog. I have for years. Xe makes the front page of The Orange Site every so often. Every time xe does I hope that there won’t be people, evidently transplanted from /r/TumblrInAction circa 2014, complaining about how Xe is a nonbinary person in a plural system that dares to post SFW furry art on xyr own website. I am proven wrong, it seems, every single time.

Why does this bother me so much? Because I’m a nonbinary person in a plural system, and I’d put art of my fursona on this very webpage if I had one. It is no exaggeration to say that the joy of self-creation is the reason I’m still here. Furries are disproportionately people like me — that is to say, trans. Reacting disgustedly to furries existing is usually, in my experience, a socially acceptable proxy for reacting disgustedly to trans people existing, and if you are disgusted by my existence then you deserve my scorn.

Why do I get into flame wars about it? Somebody’s got to. The real question is, why do I still read The Orange Site? I think largely because I haven’t built an alternative content funnel for myself. I don’t really need social networks, anyway; my social life in meatspace is good enough. So The Orange Site can fester from its overdose of whatever it is they’re apparently putting in the water in the Bay these days. They don’t know what they’re missing.
